Taking something old and breathing new life into it can be a lot of fun and a very creative and rewarding process as well. House renovations are a magnificent example. The design possibilities and strategies that can be used when working on something like this are endless.
For a particular house located in Asolo, Italy, the strategy was to create a reinterpretation of the original but in a different style. Studio TIXA managed to transform this rural retreat into something on par with other contemporary houses without ruining its authenticity and charm
The house was originally built back in the 1950s and belonged to the current owner’s grandfather. The plan was to update it and turn it into a modern home but at the same time to preserve the beautiful memories and the link to the past that it originally had. The architects were successful in their attempt and they managed to turn this into a beautiful and modern house with a bright and airy interior, open spaces, large windows and a nice connection to the immediate surroundings.
A very important element in the design strategy was the decision to reuse a lot of the materials from the existing house. Those were incorporated into the new design in order to give the house a lived in look and lots of charm and character. This way the link to the past was preserved in a way that makes sense in the modern world.
Having a look inside, we can easily recognize how open and inviting the house looks and feels. The living room, kitchen and dining area were combined into a single large space on the ground floor, with a fireplace, a sliding barn door and a brick accent wall. The private areas are gathered upstairs where it’s a very intimate and cozy ambiance.
